VEGETABLE & HERB GARDENS

The Centre has a Compost Bin, as well as Vegetable Gardens and Herb Gardens that have been created to support children's knowledge and understanding of healthy eating, plants and minibeasts, and the world around them.

Caring for the Vegetable and Herb Gardens helps children understand where food comes from, and they find great pleasure in watering and weeding the gardens in the lead up to harvesting their produce.  Through our gardening experiences, the children also learn about "companion planting" and which herbs and plants are useful in minimising insect interference.  Children also learn about minibeasts, i.e. the wonderful array of bugs and insects that use the Vegetable Gardens as part of their own survival.

Gardening can also extend children's learning in a variety of different areas such as:

  • Transport - how fruit and vegetables from farms reach our grocery stores;
  • Weather - which seasons suit which fruits and vegetables;
  • Multiculturalism - how other countries and cultures use fruits and vegetables in meals such as curries, rice, pizza and pasta dishes.

Children enjoy eating their Centre-grown produce, and often "sell" bags of herbs to parents in the afternoons.
